partial tone
phys. One of the many tones that make up one musical sound. Each partial tone (or partial) has only one frequency. The lowest partial of a musical sound is called the fundamental frequency. Any partial whose frequency is a multiple of the fundamental frequency is called a harmonic. The fundamental frequency is also called the first harmonic. The second harmonic has twice the frequency of the fundamental; the third harmonic, three times the frequency, and so on.
