phys. A transition between one state of matter and another. Melting is the change of state from solid to liquid, with freezing the reverse change. Boiling is the change of state from liquid to gas, with condensation the reverse change. Sublimation is the change of state from solid directly to gas or vice versa. During a change of state, the temperature remains constant as the latent heat is transferred.
